My Dad, My "Why"
I joined the fight against heart disease after it nearly took my father's life. It was Thanksgiving, 2010. What started as a normal holiday week, ended with my dad in the hospital, being kept alive by machines. We found out that week that he had lived through mild heart attacks and episodes, not knowing that five of his arteries were failing. My dad, the toughest man I know, never flinched at the pain, but he was being taken down by a disease none of us knew he had. The doctors said he needed quintuple bypass, immediately. After the terrifying surgery came complications... blood clots, a collapsed lung, pneumonia... machines were giving him life. We felt hopeless, doctors became weary trying to save him... but we kept praying... hard. It worked. My dad, the true champion that he is, pulled through. Our survivor lives to tell his story, to keep others, including his sons and daughters, from suffering through a preventable illness.
Today, I fight heart disease, because my dad fought so hard.
